SOUND DESIGN AND AUDIO EDITING

DESIGN MUSEUM EVERYWHERE

In the fall of 2020, I worked for The Design Museum Foundation as a Multimedia Content Creation Apprentice. This has been a great opportunity to combine and test all my skills in audio, design, and video. A big part of my schedule was dedicated to editing the Museum’s weekly podcast, Design is Everywhere. After cleaning up the audio, I’d also create animated previews for the marketing team.

Here are some of my favorite episodes I have worked on:

Today we're talking about building buildings out of wood - sounds pretty normal, but no we're talking about building tall, high-rise buildings out of wood instead of steel and concrete, using a concept known as mass timber and construction products like cross-laminated timber.

What does the future of play look like in a socially distanced world? In this episode, Sam is joined by Cheri Ruane to dive into the world of play design. Cheri is the Vice President and Landscape Architecture Practice Leader at Weston and Sampson, a design and engineering firm committed to improving the natural and built environment.

SOUNDS CREATED WITH ABLETON, MAX/MSP, AND LOGIC.

MEGAN THEE STALLION’S “SAVAGE”

CHOPPED, SCREWED, AND MOSHED!

Audio assembled in Ableton, in true Houston Chopped and Screwed fashion.

Visuals created with Datamosh Studio.

The original animations were created by Jude Mc.

They were kind enough to acknowledge this work!

PEPPA DREAM

MAC AND CHEESE

SPACE CATS

Peppa Dream was a storytelling exercise. Peppa Dream is based on a real dream.

The music of Peppa Dream was created in Ableton, using both MIDI instruments and my ukulele.

An experiment with microtonal music, Mac and Cheese is a journey into the mind of the beloved Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends character, Cheese. The microtonal steps were created with a custom patch designed in MAX/MSP. This project was created at Pomona College for Electronic Music Studio.

POOL (MUSIQUE CONCRETE)

Assembled in Logic, pool is a practice of musique concrete, a method of musical composition from raw, collected sounds.

Created my freshman year, Space Cats was my final project for Intro to Audio Production at Pitzer College. Created completely in Ableton, Space Cats tells the fictional story of cat astronauts who get lost in space. They are then rescued by musician and philanthropist Akon. Real cat meows were sampled for this piece.

TURTLE.FUNK ( )

This Python-made animation is accompanied by another original composition created in Ableton.

IN 2018, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH DAVID BLUMENKRANTZ AND THE MUSEUM OF SOCIAL JUSTICE, WHERE I EDITED INTERVIEWS OF HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS IN LOS ANGELES. I CREATED AUDIO and video INSTALLATIONS FOR THE MUSEUM’S EXHIBITION, AND POSTED EXTENDED INTERVIEWS ONLINE.

IMAGE EDITING IN DAWS ???

Data-bending, glitch art, and data-moshing have taken my image and video editing to the next level.

Here are some pictures I have edited in Audacity, a powerful free and open-source DAW. I import the images as “raw data”, and the DAW loads the image like it would any audio file (it sounds absolutely terrible when you play it back). Effects like Reverb, High-pass filter, and Amplitude, as well as just chopping up the audio create the textures and effects you see here. Some color has been edited in Photoshop for artistic purposes.
